 Join alumni from the Northern California area to tour the USS Hornet and enjoy lunch in the Officers’ Mess. We will meet at the gangplank stair entry to the ship at 9:30 a.m. The tour will start at 10:00 a.m. and take approximately 2 hours. We will have a box lunch which includes a French roll sandwich, pasta salad, chips and a water or soft drink. The sandwich choices are: turkey, ham, roast beef, pastrami, tuna, cheese, or egg salad. Please indicate your choice(s) when you register.
We will have a docent guide us on a tour of the ship. Many of the docents have served aboard aircraft carriers. There are several deck levels on the ship, and we will be climbing ladders to access them, so there will be some time spent on your feet.
The USS Hornet was launched in 1943 and saw action in WWII and the Vietnam conflict. She also recovered the Apollo 11and 12 space capsules. Decommissioned in 1970, she became a museum in 1998, and is berthed at Pier 3 at Alameda Point (the former NAS Alameda). Children 4 and under are considered too young for the ladder climbing and attention span required for the tour. |
