This program is sponsored by: student organizations RPI WIN (Women in Nuclear), SWE (Society of Engineers), ANS (American Nuclear Society); and by Rensselaer’s Division of Institute Advancement. These organizations are bringing Kankus to campus to provide an opportunity for the Rensselaer community to hear from a very successful alumna about her background, and how her career began in the field of nuclear engineering. The evening will begin with the presentation by Ms. Kankus, followed by a light reception that will include hors d’oeuvres as well as a chance to network and interact with Ms. Kankus directly. ABOUT OUR SPEAKER Roberta (Robbie) Kankus’ 39-year career began when she joined Exelon (then Philadelphia Energy Company) in the Engineering and Research Department following her graduation from Rensselaer. In 1976, she received a Nuclear Regulatory Commission Senior Reactor Operator license for PBAPS, becoming the first woman in the United States licensed to operate a commercial nuclear power plant. Kankus has been recognized by organizations and publications both within the nuclear industry and in the general media as an industry role model, including being selected as one of Glamour magazine’s ten outstanding women. She was a recipient of the US Women in Nuclear Patricia Bryant Leadership Award for her contributions to the nuclear industry. She is a founding member of the US Women in Nuclear organization. Kankus represented Exelon Power on the Society of Women Engineer’s Corporate Partnership Council and was active in Exelon’s participation in SWE’s annual conference.
