Graduate School News

To better prepare students to meet the growing demands of industry and the marketplace, Rensselaer offers undergraduates the opportunity to extend some of their financial aid and earn both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in 5 years or less through one of our co-terminal programs. Rensselaer’s Office of Graduate Admissions, with participation from the Office of Graduate Education (OGE), hosted several Information Sessions including two virtual Open Houses this semester. The feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive. In today's competitive global economy, every advantage is an asset. To that end, it is our intent to grant our students opportunities to maximize their potential whenever they can. We are pleased to announce that the deadline to submit one’s co-terminal application has been extended! Students now have until the end of the first semester of the senior year to submit their co-terminal application to OGE.

The Office of Graduate Education, in collaboration with Student Life, has continued the series of the co-curricular seminars for the graduate student body, again this spring 2013 semester. A range of topics were covered including Public Speaking, Thesis Submission Tips and Techniques, and separate sessions on healthy practices for Nutrition, Fitness and Sleep. Upcoming workshops will include Communication Skill Development & Rapport Building and a review of the Fellowship application process. The workshops are designed to enhance the academic and personal development of graduate students and continue to be well-received by students, staff, and faculty. Graduate students are encouraged to organize and conduct sessions of their own as part of the series. Please contact Associate Dean Dennis Gornic, at or (518) 276-6488 for additional information.

The Office of Graduate Education is pleased to present “The Dean’s Salon,” a gathering of various members of the Rensselaer community at a local coffee shop to discuss a wide array of topics informally. The topics of discussion this semester include Climate Change, Hydrofracking and Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief. The intent of the Dean’s Salon is to create an engaging and intimate atmosphere where important topics can be openly discussed among graduate students, faculty, and other members of the Rensselaer community. Each salon discussion is led by a member of the Rensselaer faculty. All participants are encouraged to suggest future topics and/or offer to lead a future salon discussion. These spirited meetings occur periodically throughout the semester at the Stir It Up Coffeehouse at City Station West. For more information, please contact Associate Dean, Dennis Gornic, at or (518) 276-6488.

The Office of Graduate Education (OGE) is pleased to announce that the expansion of the Rensselaer Graduate Community Housing is underway and on track to open this August of 2013! Last fall, City Station West was filled to capacity; City Station South, housing for married students and students with families, filled to nearly two-thirds capacity in its first year. In response to popular demand and the success of the Rensselaer Graduate Housing, City Station East, the third building is being constructed. The housing development is within walking distance of the college campus and provides an affordable, safe, and comfortable environment for Rensselaer graduate students and graduate level affiliates. Please visit for details.

The Office of Graduate Education (OGE) offers its students resources to finance their research and academic careers. If you know someone who is considering graduate studies or interested in doing research abroad, there are opportunities available! For a listing of upcoming external fellowships and scholarships, please visit our website. For more information, please contact Heather Carbary at
